Devil Dinosaur!

After a trip to Drumheller’s Royal Tyrell Museum this Summer, my three year old daughter and I became completely enamoured with dinosaurs.  One of my favourite Jack Kirby characters is Devil Dinosaur and his companion, Moon Boy.  ‘Nuff said!

The Fox and the Grapes

I decided to beef up my portfolio with some more classic illustrations, so I decided to go with Aesop’s Fables.  The first one on the drawing board ended up being “The Fox and the Grapes”.  Seeing as how I can be a bit of a pessimist at times, I figured this might be a wise first choice.

Wild Thing

This is probably the funnest piece I’ve done yet.  There’s a self-portrait that Maurice Sendak did of himself and his hero, Mickey Mouse.  Since his most famous book “Where the Wild Things Are” was the book that inspired me to become an artist, I figured it only made sense to do a self-portrait as a Wild Thing!Wild Thing

Recently I underwent open heart surgery because of a rare condtion I have called “Takayasu’s Arteritis” which causes inflammation in the main arteries leading off of the aortic arch.  The arteries leading to my arms had become completely blocked, forcing the blood to go through my carotid arteries (which were also narrowed) into my brain before getting to my arms.  This put me at a high risk for a stroke as well as losing strength in both of my arms.  This is the first drawing I did 2 weeks after the surgery.  My arms are still a little shaky, but it is slowly coming back.  I’ve always been a fan of the Invaders from Marvel Comics and this happened to be the first thing that popped into my head while convalescing.

Portrait of Doug Wildey

I just finished this tonight.  I’ve been working on it for a few weeks when I’ve had spare time.  I’ve decided to do portraits of the artists who have influenced me the most, and Doug Wildey happens to be the first.  For those who don’t know, Mr. Wildey is one of the old-school illustrators from the golden and silver age.  He is the man who created Hanna Barbera’s “Jonny Quest”, a cartoon from my childhood that had a major impact me (and still does!)Wildey Photo Final

spidey blue bkgd flatAnother pic I did for fun.  I’m a HUGE fan of the 1967 Spider-Man cartoon.  It was a Satuday morning ritual as a kid (now I have the DVD set and can watch it at my leisure!).  Back in my days at the Alberta College of Art, I took pictures of the floors around the acid baths in the printmaking dept.  They had such neat colours and textures.  I dug them out recently and they reminded me a bit of the old Spidey cartoon backgrounds.  So I played around with it and this is what I came up with.
